The MECCC developing a plan to supply nearly all the electricity used by the OSC, the town garage and the fire station from renewable sources. Stay tuned for more information. In other news, the Central Vermont Community Action Council is hosting a series of weatherization workshops for DIY folks. Click here for the brochure.
Although we seem to have been slowing down, we have been working hard at wrapping up some projects. The energy audit for the OSC is complete as is most of the work to tighten it up. Thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers, we have cut the air infiltration of the building by a factor of four, making it tighter than a new home and tighter than similar buildings in the area. We are now working on a plan to replace the soon-to-be-phased-out T12 light fixtures with T8 fixtures that will use less energy and have less toxic materials in them.
We passed the local share for the Rte 2 commuter bus! GMTA will begin running a commuter bus along Rte 2 in April 2010. A final public meeting was held in Marshfield (March 22), Plainfield and East Montpelier to finalize the stops and schedule. Check with your local energy coordinator or an energy committee member for details. This PDF provides some more information, and this PDF shows the route and preliminary schedule as of February 24, 2010. The final schedule is available at the GMTA website. Anyone with questions or willing to help spread the word, please e-mail Rich at krphil@myfairpoint.net or 454-7702. Don't forget that GMTA has cut the price of tickets in half as of July 1 2010. It now costs just $1 to get all the way to Montpelier or St Johnsbury.
We are put together a tour of local residents' alternative energy systems in June, a summer workshop about solar water heating systems for area homeowners in late August and a Button Up workshop on weatherization in October. All workshops were well attended, but we'd like to see even more people at future workshops.
This winter and spring we worked on a program in conjunction with the energy committees of East Montpelier and Plainfield and with Efficiency Vermont. In this program, we are visiting Marshfield households to install free energy-saving devices (compact fluorescent lights, low-flow shower heads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation, water heater blankets, and programmable thermostats) and to offer a quick assessment of how the residents could save even more energy with targeted investments including tips on how to pay for those investments. This is a pilot project for Efficiency Vermont. If all goes well, it may be rolled out in more towns. You can also download a form for caclulating your home's energy efficiency here.
The report to the town for our activities in 2008 appeared in the Town Report and is available here as a PDF file.
In the Fall of 2008, in cooperation with the energy committees of Plainfield, Cabot, and East Montpelier, as well as the Twinfield School, we put together the Upper Winooski Valley Energy Fair for local residents. Over 200 people attended. The program for the fair is available here.
Here are some photos from the fair.
